Hades Canyon, Death Valley National Park

Hades Canyon is another BIG Death Valley Classic. Good fun, despite what the Baptists say. Didn't take too many photos that day, but here's what I have...

Under threatening skies, early morning finds us up in the wind of Dante's View again, with Hades as the day's objective. We follow the instructions from Chris Brennan's Excellent Website across the ridge, then down this slope into a canyon.

Ram's Death Valley Diary of the day available HERE (on the Canyons Group).

Sunrise shows moisture in the air, something unusual in this neck of the woo... uh, desert.

First rappel. Bill and Steve take a gander.

ce04.jpg

We gear up. Big cairns as usual.

ce05.jpg

And down we go. Hades is more of a shallow canyon on a big face, with big drops, than a slot.

ce06.jpg

A little chilly this morning. Steve going over the edge.

El Ramoo, looking suave as usual.

Toward the bottom, be find a larger-than-usual piece of litter.

Top of the alluvial fan, the gang de-gearing for the walk down.

Mr. Wolverton, looking more scruffy after a week in the field.

Back up at Dante's View to fetch the car, a nice view of the valley bottom, through the clouds.
